Description:

Who are you?

What have we done to each other?

These are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy’s friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn’t true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren’t made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what did happen to Nick’s beautiful wife?

My View:

This book has garnered so much press, and just about every new work of crime fiction I pick up refers their book as the “New Gone Girl” I decided it was time that I should read the original and see what the hype was about. I think I am a few years too late. So many books now have the “twist” that I actually saw this coming – I was not at all surprised. After that major reveal I found the book to be, in parts, quite hilarious; as I was reading I had recollections of the black comedy War of the Roses with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner…which was released in 1989.

I wish I had read this book when it first came out in 2012 – I think my review would have been more enthusiastic. I read a lot of fiction and the plotting that was unique in this book, is no longer. I am interested to discover what the next “new thing” in contemporary fiction/crime fiction will be… But if you are a casual reader, if you like to read the book before seeing the film, if you want to see what all the press is about – read Gone Girl.

  1. You know, I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw a parallel to The War of the Roses, Carol. Your post has really got me thinking now about what will be the next ‘thing…’

    • Margot – I am relieved to hear that I am not alone with War Of the Roses- a much darker version but all the same…I really didn’t know much about this book before I picked it up…just kept seeing new books with the claim “the Next Gone Girl” so thought I had better read.

  2. Still haven’t read it, and I doubt I ever will. I’m afraid excessive hype often has that effect on me – puts me off, rather than pulling me in. So meanly, I’m rather glad you’re not too enthusiastic about it… 😉
