Review: The Fast 800 – Dr Michael Mosley

The Fast 800

The Fast 800

How to Combine Rapid Weight Loss and Intermittent Fasting for Long Term Health

Dr Michael Mosley

Simon and Schuster

ISBN: 9781760850180

Description:

Six years ago, Dr Michael Mosley started a health revolution with the 5:2 Fast Diet, telling the world about the incredible power of intermittent fasting. In this book he brings together all the latest science – including  a new approach: Time Restricted Eating – to create an easy-to-follow programme.

Recent studies have shown that 800 calories is the magic number when it comes to successful dieting – it’s an amount high enough to be manageable but low enough to speed weight loss and trigger a range of desirable metabolic changes.

The secret of this new programme is that it is highly flexible – depending on your goals, you can choose how intensively you want to do it.

Along with delicious, low-carb, Mediterranean-style recipes and menu plans by Dr Clare Bailey, The Fast 800 offers an effective way to help you lose weight, improve mood and reduce blood pressure, inflammation and blood sugars. Take your future health into your own hands.

My View:

Dr Michael Mosley delivers another powerful and informative, motivating read that introduces us to recent science based theories on managing your health that he has personally explored. I like his personable approach, his willingness to put his body on the line in the name of medical research is commendable.

As always, the writing here is accessible, the data/evidence presented in clear and concise ways that make choosing good health a realistic outcome. TRE (Time Restricted Eating) IF (Intermittent Fasting) are something that we are going to hear a lot more about in mainstream medicine and Dr Mosley succinctly explains how using these methods, in a responsible way, we can trigger a range of metabolic changes that will improve our health.

Fascinating reading.

My View:

As you are  most likely aware I am a big fan of all things gut health and of this particular series of books and documentaries.  This book is presented in an easy to read language and full of recipes that will not break the bank to make; most ingredients are already in your pantry/fridge/freezer; Sausage and Mediterranean veg tray bake, beef and orange stew with mushrooms, black bean beet burgers, vegetable and paneer curry…slow roasted shoulder of lamb…and healthy nutrient bars and cakes, there is something here for everyone.

“I haven’t felt this good in years.” Sophie, 29, former sufferer of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)

Your gut is astonishingly clever. It contains millions of neurons – as many as you would find in the brain of a cat – and is home to the microbiome, an army of microbes that influences your mood, weight and immune system.

In this ground breaking book, Dr Mosley takes us on a revelatory journey through the gut, showing how junk food and overuse of antibiotics have wiped out many “good” gut bacteria, leading to a modern plague of allergies, food intolerances and obesity.

Setting the record straight on everything from prebiotics to probiotics, fermented foods to fasting, Dr Mosley provides scientifically proven ways to control your appetite and boost your mood.

The Clever Guts Diet is packed with delicious, healing recipes, menu plans, checklists and tips – all the tools you need to transform your gut and change the way you eat forever.

“I am one of the few people to have seen their own guts in action, and I can honestly say it was one of the most remarkable and informative experiences of my scientific career. In this book I’ll tell you how your gut makes you who you are, and what you can do about it.” – Dr Michael Mosley.

My View:

I am a big fan of Dr Michael Mosley. I like him, I like his style of reporting and documenting science based health information which is presented in clear, easy to read language and is backed by Dr Mosley’s personal scientific experimentation, research and the research of others.

Gut based health is something that I (and my immediate family) are very aware of and very interested in.  There is still so much to learn about the gut and its microbiome – this book is an excellent starting point, a useful reference and the recipes are easy to follow and taste delicious.  Learn about resistant starches (not all starches are created equal), probiotics, prebiotics, fermented foods and how to re boot your biome and so much more. Gut health is so important to your overall health. Change your gut biome – one delicious meal at a time, change your health.

My View:

The perfect follow on from the highly successful 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet.  Low carb, low calorie, low sugar; each recipe lists the calories, protein, fat, fibre and carb content so you cannot go wrong with this diet.  I love that many recipes add legumes to the mix – filling, high fibre and rich in protein and low cost, I am adding legumes where ever I can to my meals.  There is even a recipe for a chocolate kidney bean cake (p.189) the authors’ state: “We cooked this for a bunch of teenagers who liked it and never got close to guessing that the main ingredient was kidney beans.”  What do you think? Would you be able to guess? I think I might just have to make this cake and see who I can surprise J (you can also use this recipe to make cupcakes- what a great idea!)

There are many recipes in this book that lend themselves to everyday cooking – and I am sure I will be incorporating more than a few into our diet: Berry coulis or “jam” – made with chia seeds – I keep hearing so much about this style of “jam” I might have to try it out, roasted fruit, kimchi, Thai fish cakes, Moroccan meatballs, chili con carne, easy Bolognese, Vietnamese pho, laksa, haloumi kebabs and many great breakfast and brunch ideas. You will not be bored if you plan your meals from this book and you might just reduce your blood sugar levels too!

The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet

The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet

Dr Michael Mosley

Simon & Schuster Australia

ISBN: 9781925368413

Description:

Dr Michael Mosley, author of the bestselling 5:2 Fast Diet, reveals a game-changing approach to one of the greatest silent epidemics of our time – raised blood sugar levels.

The food we eat today, high in sugar and easily digestible carbohydrates, is not only making us fat, but is putting us at risk of type 2 diabetes, strokes, dementia, cancer and a lifetime on medication. More than a third of adults in the UK now have raised blood sugar levels and most don’t know it.

In this timely book, Dr Mosley explains why we pile on dangerous abdominal fat and shows us how to shed it, fast. He demolishes common myths, such as the claim that steady weight loss is always better than rapid weight loss and that those who lose weight rapidly will inevitably put it back on.

This is a book not just for those at highest risk but for anyone who has struggled with their weight and wants to regain control of their health.

‘I feel amazing. I have been given another chance at life.’ –Cassie, 28 — lost 20kg

Average weight loss: 14kg in 8 weeks.

Includes a detailed 8-week programme with menu plans.

My View:

It is not secret I am a big fan of Dr Michael Mosley – I love listening to him (he has a great voice) and I am intrigued by the lengths he goes to  test a hypothesis – he uses his own body to conduct scientific experiments on and shares with the reader/viewer the process and the results.  His advice is simple, easy to understand and based on science and medical knowledge (he s a qualified GP come film maker).

Before I started reading this book I came across a video “How to Stay Healthy, What the Latest Science Tells Us by Dr Michael Mosley at the All About Women Conference 2016. You can watch it here:  http://ow.ly/Z8BNN   I was inspired to read the book afterwards.

In this book Dr Mosley looks at the epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes that has recently engulfed the world. Look around at your own family, friends and colleagues and tally up how many people you know that are at risk of or have already been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I don’t have to look very far to find a few who have already been diagnosed in my immediate family.

The book is informative and provides sections on:  The Science – the why this disease is flourishing and ways to solve it. The Diet – talks about the core principles of the Blood Sugar Diet and is followed up with a Recipes and Menu Plan. This is a compact, easy to read, motivating read that will change your life. And if you listen carefully you will hear Dr Michael Mosley narrating the video playing in your head as you read – perfect!
