Description;

Thoughts and advice on the creative writing process from an international master of literature.

In this book Haruki Murakami explores his craft. He muses upon the qualities a novelist needs such as endurance and delight in the process as well as laying out his own methods. He covers topics such as originality, finding your own style, creating characters and links between literature, music and art. He also talks about his own life experiences and how they have influenced his work and his relationship with the Japanese literary establishment. He discusses education, the importance of reading, his literary influences and his path to success and the way he balances physical and intellectual work in his life. Wise and enlightening, this is a window into the world of an unique writer.

My View:

Imagine you sitting in big cosy armchair, opposite you in the famous writer, Haruki Murakami. Perhaps it is after dinner, you are both feeling comfortable and relaxed, you have, after all spent some time that evening around the table getting to know one another during a superb four course meal. Relaxed, you sit opposite one another and conversation begins or maybe continues. This is the book you now have in front of you – conversations, musings, reflections.

I found it entertaining, engaging and surprising, unpretentious.

A stand out reflection for me was ” I have a standard answer when interviewers ask me about literary prizes – this question invariably comes up, whether in Japan or abroad. ‘The most important thing,’ I tell them, ‘is good readers. Nothing means as much as much as the people who dip into their pockets to buy my books – not prizes or medals or critical praise.’ I repeat this answer over and over ad nauseum, yet it doesn’t seem to sink in. Most often it is completely ignored.” pps 44-45. Did I mention humility?

I enjoyed this conversation with Murakami.

Review: Fortune and Glory – Janet Evanovich

Fortune and Glory

Stephanie Plum #27

Description:

The twenty-seventh entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series isn’t just the biggest case of Stephanie Plum’s career. It’s the adventure of a lifetime.

When Stephanie’s beloved Grandma Mazur’s new husband died on their wedding night, the only thing he left her was a beat-up old easy chair…and the keys to a life-changing fortune.

But as Stephanie and Grandma Mazur search for Jimmy Rosolli’s treasure, they discover that they’re not the only ones on the hunt. Two dangerous enemies from the past stand in their way—along with a new adversary who’s even more formidable: Gabriela Rose, a dark-eyed beauty from Little Havana with a taste for designer clothes. She’s also a soldier of fortune, a gourmet cook, an expert in firearms and mixed martial arts—and someone who’s about to give Stephanie a real run for her money.

Stephanie may be in over her head, but she’s got two things that Gabriela doesn’t: an unbreakable bond with her family and a stubborn streak that will never let her quit.

She’ll need both to survive because this search for “fortune and glory” will turn into a desperate race against time with more on the line than ever before. Because even as she searches for the treasure and fights to protect her Grandma Mazur, her own deepest feelings will be tested—as Stephanie could finally be forced to choose between Joe Morelli and Ranger.

My View:

Another entertaining, fun and at times, salacious read. Stephanie Plum falls, drops out of windows, headbutts the bad guy, runs through rat infested tunnels and generally attracts chaos and mayhem where ever she goes.  This is a fun light read that is guaranteed to make you smile and think about Ranger (or Morelli  or both) 😊

My View:

I haven’t had the time lately to experiment in the kitchen with recipes from some of the new cook books I have at hand, (we have been on holidays, twice in the past two months and when back home have been extra busy, or had lots of visitors or commitments), this year has just been busy. However tonight I sat down and had a good look at A Whole New Way To Eat by Vladia Cobrdova and I am  now excited about the idea of returning to the kitchen and trying out some of these tantalizing, fresh, healthy and delicious looking recipes.

There are great breakfast ideas, dips, sides, mains, snacks, lunch, soups… “The dishes in this book cover every occasion – for when you only have 10 minutes to prepare a nutritious snack to keep the energy levels up and stress levels down, or for creating a meal to impress your guests. Perhaps you want to experience the sense of achievement you get from baking bread and serving with lashings of good quality local butter?” (YES YES YES) Vladia hopes that by sharing these recipes she can pass on some of the enjoyment and satisfaction that cooking has given her, her family and the clients of About Life. (p9)  And the recipes here cater to a variety of dietary requirements; including gluten free, paleo, vegan, vegetarian, raw food, meat lovers…there is sure to be something here for everyone.

Let’s get cooking!
