He saw what you did … He knows who you are. The stunning new standalone from the no.1 international bestselling author

AN ORDINARY LIFE …

Leigh Coulton has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defence attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilised – her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be.

HIDES A DEVASTATING PAST …

But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood which was far from average … a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

BUT NOW THE PAST IS CATCHING UP …

Then a case lands on her desk – defending a wealthy man accused of rape. It’s the highest profile case she’s ever been given – a case which could transform her career, if she wins. But when she meets the accused, she realises that it’s no coincidence that he’s chosen her as his attorney. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he knows what happened twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades running.

AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT.

If she can’t get him acquitted, she’ll lose much more than the case. The only person who can help her is her younger, estranged sister Calli, the last person Leigh would ever want to ask for help. But suddenly she has no choice …

My View:

Looking for an author who never disappoints? Look no further. I can highly recommend every single book this author has written.

This book comments on bullying, addictions, predatory behaviour…redemption. There is so much behaviour I recognise (but not quite so violently as Ms Slaughter writes), and I love how thrilling, engaging, tense and passionate writing can shed the light on so many issues without preaching or ranting.

As always Karin Slaughter is a great writer! 5 stars from me.

Description:

The electrifying new thriller from international bestseller Karin Slaughter explores the deadly secrets kept between a mother and daughter.

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all?

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Gullaway Island; she knows she’s never had any more ambition than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. A side which is a million miles from the quiet, gentle woman who brought her up. And more than that, news coverage of the mall attack puts Laura’s face on every TV screen in the country – and leaves her terrified. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura she was someone completely different. For nearly 30 years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one will ever find her and re-open the wounds left by the terrible events which made it impossible for her ever to go back. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Twenty-four hours later Laura is in hospital, shot by an intruder who’s spent thirty years trying to track her down and discover what she knows. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumbs of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either of them…

My View:

I don’t know why I am always surprised when I read a Karin Slaughter standalone – by now I should know that it will be a fantastic read, with mystery, intrigue, a great in depth look at the human condition, prose to make you think and a murder or two. This is another such brilliant book – totally different to anything else I have read by this author (which is a good surprise), you could call this a coming of age meets a seasoned manipulator who has never experienced the bonds and sacrifice that is a mother’s love.

Another great read from this fabulous author.

Description:

From the hallucinatory noir story ‘Go Deep’ to the twisted short stories ‘Necessary Women’ and ‘Remmy Rothstein Toes the Line,’ this collection showcases the Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author’s dark humour, limitless imagination, and masterly command of voice and character. (‘Go Deep’ and ‘Remmy Rothstein Toes the Line’ also available as single stories and ‘Necessary Women’ also available as part of a bundle with ‘The Mean Time’)

GO DEEP

Growing up dirt poor, Charlie Lam worked his ass off to make something of himself, no thanks to his deadbeat father or his long-suffering mother. And now a lot of people depend on Charlie: by his last count, sixty-eight employees at his Atlanta auto dealership, eleven shiftless brothers and sisters, an ungrateful wife, a spoiled daughter, a shameless girlfriend. Who could really blame him for wanting a little extra?

The arrangement is simple: Charlie picks up a suit from the dry cleaner’s. In the suit pocket is the name of a very important man. The next day, that man walks into the dealership, drives out in a new car, and Charlie gets a fat envelope full of cash. Everyone’s happy. No one gets hurt. So long as Charlie doesn’t cross his business partner. But with one twist of a knife, the unthinkable happens. And suddenly Charlie is in deeper trouble than he could have possibly imagined.

NECESSARY WOMEN

In a border town between Georgia and Alabama, in a three-room house made of cement block, a fourteen-year-old girl watches her mother die. Her father is a long-haul trucker, away for weeks, sometimes months, at a time. Her mother, with two menial jobs cleaning restrooms and working nights at the laundry, had been just thirty years old.

A week before she died, noticing her daughter getting attention from a boy, the girl’s mother warned her not to make the same mistakes she did. Now, her father tells her, she’s the woman of the house, and she must do all the necessary things the woman must do: the cleaning, the cooking, the laundry. But there’s a lot more to being a woman than fixing dinner and doing the wash. Her mother was right: She won’t end up like her – and she’ll do anything to prove it.

REMMY ROTHSTEIN TOES THE LINE

As an intrepid adjudicator of World Records, Mindy Patel has met lots of strange people in lots of strange places. But they’re no match for the Swampers of the Georgia bayou. Mindy has braved the oppressive August heat in search of Remmy Rothstein, who they call ‘The Cajun Jew’. If the photos are indeed accurate, she might be about to certify Remmy as the World Record Holder for Longest Tongue in the World . . . and maybe even the Widest!

First Mindy meets Remmy’s half-brother, Buell Rabinowitz, surely the world’s only one-legged, albino, Jewish African American. Then she makes the acquaintance of Remmy’s mother, a foul-mouthed old woman with an impressive beard. None of which prepares her for an eyeful of Remmy: a man who measures up to his singular reputation in ways that will change the course of Mindy’s life.

My View:

Karin Slaughter – you have a very dark sense of humour! At first I was quick to dismiss these short stories as a bit of twisted storytelling but the stories stay with you and as you mull them over you realise there is a lot of social commentary going on here. I love the strong women in these stories (even if some are a little messed up), I love your feminist bent Karin Slaughter – your stories say so much more than any Women’s Studies lectures I have attended.

And for the record – my favourite story here is Go Deep – this is putting the saying “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” very literally. I loved it.

Unseen

A Novel

Karin Slaughter

Random House Publishing Group – Bantam Dell

Delacorte Press

ISBN: 9780345539472

Description:

Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling novels are utterly riveting and masterfully drawn. Her latest thriller, Unseen, pits detectives, lovers, and enemies against one another in an unforgettable standoff between righteous courage and deepest evil.

Bill Black is a scary guy: a tall ex-con who rides to work on a Harley and trails an air of violence wherever he goes. In Macon, Georgia, Bill has caught the eye of a wiry little drug dealer and his cunning girlfriend. They think Bill might be a useful ally. They don’t know that Bill is actually a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent named Will Trent. Or that he is fighting his own demons, undercover and cut off from the support of Sara Linton—the woman he loves, who cannot be told of the risk Will is taking.

Sara herself has come to Macon because of a cop shooting: Her stepson, Jared, has been gunned down in his own home. Sara holds Lena, Jared’s wife, responsible: Lena, a detective, has been a magnet for trouble all her life, and Jared’s death is not the first time someone Sara loved got caught in the crossfire. Furious, Sara finds herself involved in the same case that Will is working without even knowing it, and soon danger is swirling around both of them.

In a novel of fierce intensity, shifting allegiances, and shocking twists, two investigations collide with a conspiracy straddling both sides of the law. Karin Slaughter’s latest is both an electrifying thriller and a piercing study of human nature: what happens when good people face the unseen evils in their lives.

My View:

Another stunning performance by Karin Slaughter, I was enthralled, I was mesmerised, and I was riveted to every word. It is no secret that I am a Karin Slaughter fan – I have read every book she has written since Blindsighted and what great reads they have all been.  I love this series and have particularly liked the Will Trent and Sara Linton union and story line.

This novel is not for the faint hearted- the opening chapter had me holding my hands over my eyes as I read the attack at Lena’s house; it was brutal, ferocious and gruesome but I couldn’t stop reading. Karin Slaughter’s characters depict honest emotions and responses – sometimes they may not be quite how we would respond or how we think we might respond but the responses are real. Karen shows us that relationships are complicated and that the past does affect the future – but she gives us hope that we can move on, each at our own pace.

Conspiracies, shocking twists and turns, violence, crime and passion abound.  Every range of emotion is portrayed in this novel; fear, courage, hope… loyalties and trust are tested and love that is all consuming, healing and cleansing is victorious; this novel has it all.

This novel was a stirring and emotional read – I really felt for the victims of the crimes, especially the children. I am glad that Slaughter has courage to draw attention to the plight of the disempowered, especially children and has shown how power can corrupt – no one is exempt from suspicion and the sepsis of corruption.

Karin Slaughter you are a brilliant writer and I look forward your next offering and wish you luck with the Edgar nomination for short story: The Unremarkable Heart!

How Do You Choose Your Next Read?

This is a subject I have been pondering lately – especially since I have started requesting books  from NetGalley and The Reading Room and GoodReads. In the past I have tended to look for authors I have read before, who have proved their worth and lately with my venture into ebooks (how readily available and how cheap they can be compared to paper backs) have been inspired to look for series – so I can read book after book in the same series and really enjoy the character development and have some idea of the type of read I  am about to embark on next.

I searched websites for “best of 20xx” lists, looked at book bloggers reviews etc and soon had a list of authors I was interested in reading. However i quickly ran out of options… if work is slow (and the past 12 months or so it has been very slow) I have had a lot of time to read and found I was reading 8 or 9 book in  a week – I was quickly reading through my list of preferred reads and lists of series. Over Christmas I read the CJ Box 10 book series of the wildlife officer Joe Pickett thriller/crime novels (there is one more recently published), I read the John Connolly Charlie Parker series (11 books), the Jo Nesbo  Harry Hole series (a great read aside from the first which has just been translated- stay tuned for my review), the Tess Gerritsen Rizzoli and Isles series ( 10 books)…and a quite a few others including several new releases from authors I follow including  Karin Slaughter, Micheal Connelly etc that released books for the holiday season. I read and consume books with great enjoyment and vigor.

I then discovered the world of NetGalley and was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of new releases largely from authors I was not familiar with. So how do I choose what to read? Having spent some time thinking about this I have discovered just how important the cover of a book is to my sensibilities and tastes – I was surprised out how much impact a book cover has on my desire to learn more about the story and decision to read or not.

For some reason unknown to myself I am not remotely interested in books with covers that allude to them being written forty or fifty years ago – you know the sort of thing – the style is outdated (has an op shop tone), sometimes the colours are faded yellows (a deliberate choice)…I cant quite explain it….maybe an example is needed; the cover of this book has no appeal yet may be  a perfectly good read.

Yet I have read some recently re released books from the 80’s and they have been great reads eg False Witness Dorothy Uhnak – I cannot recall the cover but it must have been appealing,

I search by genre first ( mystery/thrillers/crime) then by the cover that appealed and then read the synopsis/description and finally make my decision.

I dont like romances (I think I read to many as a teenager and quickly out grew their predictability and formulaic structure) hence any book that remotely look “typical” of this  genre is out – see below.

I almost passed on the great read -Keep No Secrets – because of it’s cover reminding me of a romance style.

So how do you pick you next read?  As you can see I like crime/thrillers but I like almost any book that is well written and interesting. What are you reading and what do you recommend?

** The covers I have used here as references (aside from Keep No Secrets) I have not read and have no knowledge of. It is not my intention to rate these books or review them – they are merely examples of covers I personally don’t like – no offence is intended to the authors or the publishers.
